STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Aleatha Brooks-Mone, 64, of West Brighton, a retired nurse, died Saturday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.

Born Aleatha Brooks in Miami, she moved to Manhattan in 1952 and to Stapleton in the early 1960s. She settled in West Brighton in 1995.

She worked as a registered nurse at the former St. Vincent's Hospital in West Brighton, retiring in 1996. She then worked with infectious diseases for Dr. Deeptha Nedunchezian in Sunnyside from 2003 until 2008.

She earned her nursing degree from the former Staten Island Community College after graduating from Curtis High School.

When she was younger, Ms. Brooks-Mone was an avid softball player and played with the Staten Island Women's Athletic Club in Stapleton from the 1960s to the early 1970s.

Ms. Brooks-Mone's favorite teams were the Yankees and the Giants. She was also an avid reader, who enjoyed Stephen King novels, but most of all loved spending time with her granddaughters.

"She especially enjoyed having tea parties with her granddaughter, Ava, and talking about history with her other granddaughter, Golden," said her daughter, Carolann Brooks.

Ms. Brooks-Mone served in the Army from 1966 to 1968.

In addition to her daughter, Carolann, and two granddaughters, Ms. Brooks-Mone is survived by two sons, Kevin Mone and Robert Mone; two brothers, Oral Brooks and Kevin Brooks, and three sisters Kathryn, Yvette and Adrienne Brooks.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 5 p.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Arrangements include cremation.
